This research analyzes a strong-motion database of embankment dams in Japan. The database includes 190 pairs of three-component time series from dam crests and foundations obtained from 54 earthquakes and 60 embankment dams recorded from 1978 to 2012. This study presents multiple linear regression models that characterize the seismic responses of dams by investigating the correlations with ground-motion parameters. The results show that the ratio of peak acceleration of dam crest to dam foundation decreases as PGA increases. From a practical perspective, the proposed prediction equations will be useful for estimating or evaluating the seismic responses of dams at the preliminary design stage. This study also presents the prediction model of natural period of embankment dams, including the influence of nonlinear responses. These models are useful in checking whether the dynamic analysis of a given numerical model is performed appropriately with nonlinear effects. This study shows that the seismic response of embankment dams depends on several factors, including dam geometry (e.g., dam height and crest length) and the characteristics of input motion. However, the uncertainties between embankment dams are very large from mixed-effect models that are not characterized by their geometry. |
