In this paper, the inter-blade vortices as a cavitation flow in a Francis hydro turbine were numerically investigated with various operating conditions. The development of cavitation vortices in the between turbine blade passages as the inter-blade vortex cavitation was often observed at the part load condition. This cavitation flow can cause the entire performance reduction, vibration, noise, and instability for operation. Therefore, the understanding of the cavitation characteristics is important for stable operation of turbine. For investigating multiphase flow and vortex characteristics, three-dimensional steady and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes calculations using the shear stress transport turbulence model and the Rayleigh Plesset cavitation model were performed. The inter-blade vortex cavitation was captured well near hub of the blade trailing edge between blade passages. This region showed flow separation and had lower velocity. |
