During an earthquake, strong ground motion instrument recordings at dam sites can provide information to dam owners and other parties to remotely assess dam deformations or damage immediately after the earthquake. The reliability of the strong motion instrument recordings to detect dam deformations or damage depends on how well the strong ground motion characteristics relate to deformation or damage. In this study, results are presented that compare the measured ground motion characteristics at a dam site with observed earth-dam deformations. The dam selected for this study is Lenihan Dam, a dam that was shaken during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and in which strong ground motion measurements were located at the dam crest and abutment. |
