In this study, the fate of algal organic matter (AOM) caused by Microcystis aeruginosa and the microbial behavior in simulated artificial recharge were investigated using laboratory scale soil columns. Moreover, the effects of AOM on the removal of nine selected trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) during managed aquifer recharge. The attenuation rate of diclofenac, bezafibrate, ibuprofen and ketoprofen was significantly reduced in the presence of AOM during soil passage. Carbamazepine was found to be difficult to remove via managed aquifer recharge. The AOM also reduced the average removal rate of selected TrOCs even after ozonation followed by soil passage by 10%. It is important to monitor the removal of TrOCs during managed aquifer recharge when the algal bloom. Nevertheless, the overall removal rate of AOM in the river water was effective via managed aquifer recharge. |
