Aquatic ecosystems are threatened on a global scale by a variety of chemical contaminants as well as destructive land-use or water-management practices. Direct chemical contaminant measuring techniques will play an important role to monitor water quality. In the present study, Selected Ion Flow Tube-Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS) equipped with newly optimized headspace technique was tested to evaluate monitoring availability of 40 organic compounds in aqueous samples. In the fugacity approach (closed system, steady-state assumption) transport of chemicals into the headspace is highly correlated with Henry’s constant. Fast analytical techniques utilizing direct mass spectrometry have greatly simplified the process of contaminant monitoring in aqueous samples, particularly volatile organic compounds. |
