Two MFCs with different anode materials (a graphite felt for G-MFC and a stain steel mesh coated with carbon nanotube for S-MFC) were constructed and operated with the acidogenic fermentation filtrate of municipal primary sludge on site. Although S-MFC showed relatively better performance than G-MFC, both MFCs showed relatively lower COD removal efficiency (<50% for G- and S-MFCs), power generation (< 30 W/m3 for G-MFC and <167 W/m3 for S-MFC), and energy recovery (<0.2 kWh/kgCOD for G-MFC and <0.6 kWh/kgCOD for S-MFC) during start-up due to the short HRTs and actual WW except to maximum power density of S-MFC. And G- and S-MFC showed slightly different microbial community depending on electrode material. Proteobacteria (25.3%) was dominant in G-MFC, while Chloroflexi (23.5%) was dominant in S-MFC. Fermenter such as R. lindanclasticus (G-MFC) and A. bacterium (S-MFC) seem to be dominated during start-up by continuous non-EABs invasion because the actual acidogenic fermentation filtrate was directly utilized as substrate without acclimation step. Nevertheless, SSM coated with CNT showed enough potential as a new electrode. In future, MFC has a significant potential as sidestream for sludge treatment. |
