MicrobialcontrolofthegeochemicalbehaviorofheavymetalsandAsincontaminatedsubsurfacewasinvestigated
throughactivationofindigenousbacteriabyorganicsupplyunderanaerobiccondition.Theresultsindicatedthat
dissolvedCd,PbandZnweremicrobiallyremovedfromsolutions,whichwaslikelyduetotheformationofmetal
sulfidesafterreductionofnaturalsulfatebyindigenoussulfate-reducingbacteria.Thesoilcontainingalargeamountof
sulfateresultedincompleteremovalofdissolvedAsafter25days,whilethereweregradualincreasesindissolvedAs
concentrationinthesoilswhichshowedlowsulfateconcentrations.Subsequentexperimentswithsulfatesupplywere
conductedtoidentifytheeffectsofsulfateamendmenttostimulatemicrobialsulfatereductiononheavymetalbehaviors.
