In this study, the analytical techniques of 51 domestic and international institutions were assessed based on
the proficiency testing of heavy metals. The proficiency testing samples that were prepared and distributed for
this study were barium and chromium, of which their homogeneity and stability in water were ensured. Thirtyeight
institutions and 45 institutions participated and submitted their results obtained from the analysis of barium
and chromium, respectively. A statistical assessment on the proficiency test was conducted on the basis
of the z-score and the results obtained are as follows: for barium, 1 institution was assessed as unsatisfactory
and 6 as doubtful, and for chromium, 6 were assessed as unsatisfactory and 4 as doubtful. The testing institutions
that had doubtful or unsatisfactory results need to consider the cause of causal analysis inaccuracies,
including reference materials, glassware, inspection of the testing equipment and recalibration, test procedure
reviews, tester training, and continuous participation in proficiency tests of relevant areas in order to promote
efforts for improving and taking preventive measures for performance improvement.
