This study was carried out to evaluate the influences of flap-gate and small hydropower generation (SHG) discharge on the distribution of phytoplankton in the Hapcheon-Changnyeong weir pool in early September, 2017. The field surveys were conducted simultaneously at four stations upstream (250 m and 500 m) of the flap-gate and SHG facility. The mean discharges of flap-gate and SHG installed on the weir were 2.9 m3 s-1 and 105.3 m3 s-1, respectively, and both were complementary. In other words, when the SHG was reduced, it was overflowed through the regulated flap-gate, and this pattern was more or less regular. Chlorophyll-a concentration in the surface layer increased when the SHG was maximized or the watergate discharges were stopped, and it was high in the bottom layer at the beginning of the flap-gate discharge. The cell density of harmful cyanobacteria was generally high in the surface and 2 m depth layers during the field survey. Thus, the flexible application of watergates and hydropower discharges according to the situation of algal biomass suggested the possibility of being a useful internal tool to control eutrophication and water-bloom. |
