This study was conducted to elucidate the water eutrophication and water-bloom developed in the lower part of the Jecheon Stream from 1979 to 2015. At annual mean concentrations, the total nutrient levels increased significantly after the construction of dam and wastewater treatment plant. The annual fluctuation of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration was very large and its maximum value exceeded 350 mg m-3. The total phosphorus concentration decreased rapidly in the downstream after chemical wastewater treatment of the Jecheon Stream. However, Chl-a concentration and algal standing crops still sustained in the hypertrophic state (>50 mg m-3, 1.0×105 cells mL-1). One of the most important causes was closely related to the annual variability of meteorological and hydrological factors observed in the stream-reservoir zone. |
