In five years after the construction of weir pools and the filling of water on the four major rivers, the Korean government implemented an environmental policy to drawdown the water-level of weir pools in order to mitigate the occurrence of harmful cyanobacterial-bloom and restore ecosystems in June and November of 2017. The most visible observations at this time were serious exposure of the littoral zone. This study was conducted to investigate the distribution of freshwater shellfish in seven weir pools of the three major rivers (Geum, Nakdong and Yeongsan) from November 13 to December 31, 2017. The species composition included Anodonta arcaeform, A. woodiana, Corbicula fluminea, Cristaria plicata, Limnoperna fortunei and Unio douglasiae. Except for C. fluminea and L. fortunei, the cumulative number of living organisms collected in the littoral zones of each weir pool ranged from 1,400 to 53,750 individual. Excessive water-level drawdown in the low-temperature period could have a devastating effect on the habitats of the freshwater shellfish due to desiccation and winter-kill. Therefore, in the future, investigation of benthic ecosystem and shellfish rescue activities were necessary at the same time during an artificial manipulation of water-level fluctuation.
