It is important to secure reservoir water without excessive seepage through dam embankment or dam foundation. Thus, it is particularly valuable to apply up-to-date technology to realize the reliable 3D mapping of subsurface preferential flow paths for existing aging dams. In this case study, the Willowstick MMR survey was applied to the testbed dams (DB and YD dam) for the first time in Korea to find the potential seep paths through embankment or foundation. The application of the Willowstick technology, as applied to the earthen embankment, is based on the principle that water seeping through and/or beneath the dam increases the conductivity of earthen materials through which it flows. The survey results are briefly described to identify, map and model preferential seepage flow paths through and beneath the dams. The magnetic field signature of the electric current is measured and modeled to identify patterns of preferential flow that are interpreted to characterize how and where seepage occurs. The survey result of YD dam is validated through borehole drilling and geotechnical investigation. It shows that the technology is proven to be effective to find underground preferential flow paths. |
