While many dams around the world are still under construction or planning, many existing dams are getting more aged and degraded over time since their completions. Due to relatively higher probability of failure during the remained life time, the ageing dams need to be properly maintained based on well-established inspection and evaluation systems. However, at present, it is not easy to know how much seriously aged or degraded they are, when to take actions required to secure its safety at rational cost. In this paper, the ageing evaluation model (AEM) is suggested as a simple evaluation model for dam ageing which can be used to determine the time for adequate maintenance works to extend the life time of dams. For development of ageing evaluation model of existing dams, a variety of data showing any changes in integrity of dam body since its completion are collected and analyzed. Some examples of ageing evaluation using the newly proposed evaluation model are presented here. It may be expected that the proposed ageing evaluation model be useful to estimate the time for a timely maintenance of existing dam facility.
