The planet boundary system was suggested to understand the planetary resilience in the global view. Increased coastal anthropogenic impacts have been an important challenging issue in global community to secure environmental resilience.  Ocean sand mining has been conducted to meet sand demands for various human community needs such as construction and coastal prevention in many countries. In Korea, sand mining sites have been moved from nearshore to EEZ areas to mitigate possible impacts of marine ecosystems. However, the EEZ sand mining has also raised severe and controversy conflicts on ecosystem impacts, especially fisheries production under a complex governance structure. This paper is intended to describe the historical background and recent governance structure to understand the roles of scientific data and research activities. The preliminary data interpretation indicated that many raised questions can be solved by using the existing data. The careful data handling and obvious communication efforts are needed to make a successful governance around EEZ sand mining issue. Both socio-economic analysis among related industry sectors and long-term monitoring program are suggested to be included into further research design and government policy.
