◎ Background (or Objective) of This Study : Coastal zone is one of the most important marine areas to provide valuable ecosystem services to human community in these days. Subtidal rockyshores have been well known as their dense populations of macroalgae and co-occurring organisms. Many species of brown algae are abundant ecosystem engineers in these important habitats. the commercially important benthic organism, abalone (Haliotis spp.), is often known as one of abundant organisms in benthic rockyshore ecosystem with macroalgal forest. Therefore, to examine the ecosystem structure and function of abalone habitat could provide a good chance to understand the ecosystem services of rockyshore habitat as one of particular areas in coastal zone. This paper reviews recent ecological studies on abalone habitats and discuss ecosystem services of coastal benthic environment including short interpretation on abalone production in Korea. |
