Multi-objective design of water distribution system (WDS) generally considers total system cost and system performance measure. There have been few efforts to improve the final solution quality of the multi-objective WDS design problem (e.g., few warm initial solution approaches). On the other hand, such efforts have been extensively made in other fields: increasing the diversity of initial solutions, applying a local search methodology, considering guided search method. This study proposes five different heuristic search approaches which can be applied to existing multi-objective optimization algorithms (MOAs): (1) three warm initial solution approaches so-called Single-Multi-optimization (SMO-1, SMO-2, and SMO-3), (2) post-optimization approach so-called Multi-Single-optimization (MSO), and (3) guided search approach utilizing engineering knowledge so-called Guide Search-optimization (GSO). The proposed methods applied in the Multi-objective Harmony Search (MOHS) framework and compared through the multi-objective design of well-known benchmark WDSs: Hanoi network. The best method was identified based on two solution quality indicators, diversity (D) and set coverage (CS), and compared with the proposed five methods. Results showed that the proposed method is a simple addition to existing MOAs which significantly increases the final solution quality. |
