Sediments produced through soil erosion affects not just the morphological change of river beds but also affects the water quality and water transportation efficiencies of a river. Excessive sedimentation of river beds and its surroundings caused by steep slopes and poor vegetation cover may result to river blockage causing inefficient water transportation and flooding in lower catchments. As a result, researchers, land developers and government officials are determined to address this issue. Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation or RUSLE is one of the most commonly used tool in assessing soil erosion risks in a watershed. In this study, the average annual soil loss rate of Gamcheon watershed, located in Nakdong river basin, was estimated by using the RUSLE methodology and by utilizing the GIS data. The results of this study can serve as a reference for future researches related to soil erosion risk assessment in mountainous basins. |
