To efficient water resource management, basic research of water resources should be conducted with priority over other research. But, in case of some of domestic experimental catchment, it is difficult to operate in experimental catchment in systematic and long-term due to low budget. 
Since 2001, for the purpose of basic research of water resource, K-water Institute designate watershed of Yongdam dam to experimental catchment. Also, there is conducted continuous research at Yongdam experimental catchment.
