Rehabilitation of existing fill dams has frequently been undertaken and an important part of the reasons for this has been the aging process. In this paper, in-depth site investigations of dam bodies are summarized in order to provide an understanding of the aging effect and to directly examine the integrity of dam cores for 13 earth cored fill dams that had been in place for 9 to 52 years since the end of their construction. For characterization of aging dam core material, state-of-the-art methods are introduced such as no-water boring and core sampling, SPT with (N1)60 correction, downhole survey, electrical resistivity survey, and surface wave seismic survey. Besides these techniques, a variety of laboratory testing is conducted to determine the engineering properties of aging dam core samples. Reliable shear wave velocity profiles depending on depth are obtained that will be used as a reference dataset among dam engineers. As a result of these comprehensive investigations and laboratory testing, the integrity of aging core material is evaluated. The research outcomes will be valuable for validation of dam safety and to provide highly reliable input parameters for rehabilitation analyses by dam engineers and researchers. |
