Safety or performance of embankment dams is often evaluated by either numerical or physical modeling methods during design or management stages. While numerical modeling is mostly preferred in engineering practice, physical modeling is also considered in case that complicated operational conditions or material characteristics are involoved in the structural behavior. Especially for the embankment dams, reduced scale physical modeling is often conducted within a large centrifuge in order to provide correct scaling of the self-weight stresses so that the strength or deformation characteristics of materials as well as the global behavior of structural model can be considered more realistic. Recent advances in physical modeling subjected to more complicated loading conditions and providing valuable measurement data. The purpose of this paper is to introduce state-of-the-art applications of physical modeling using geotechnical centrifuge in the design or performance evaluation of embankment dams. The background of geotechnical centrifuge as well as the fields of applications in dam safety problems will be introduced. Especially, recent applications in dam safety problems in Korea such as seepage, draingage, and seismic behavior performance will be introduced as well. |
