For dynamic analysis of existing fill dams, it is essential to investigate dynamic stiffness with respect to depths, which is represented by shear wave velocity (Vs) profiles. Current engineering practice for dynamic analysis typically adopts either using empirical formula to find shear wave velocity profile such as Sawada and Takahashi [1] and Kim et al. [2], or using non-destructive geophysical survey which is mainly surface wave seismic surveys. However, Sawada and Takahashi’s empirical formula is based on the field measurement of a few limited number of dams using borehole seismic survey and seismic data analysis of recorded acceleration time histories. Also, the degree of saturation is highly variable and subjective when it is interpreted. Later, Kim et al. [2] proposed another empirical Vs profiles for dam core and shell zones mainly based on surface wave seismic surveys including MASW, SASW, and HWAW. Basically Kim et al.’s proposed profiles encompasses Ha and Oh’s data [3]. |
