The environmental connectivity between land and ocean is one of emerging issues in coastal studies.  The transportation need of heavy and huge goods is usually satisfied by the ship operation.  The river-to-ocean waterways and canals have been very useful trials to move tremendous amount of goods and are still effective in many countries.  However, there are several environmental considerations such as non-native species and water quality of brine water.  The Gyeongin Ara Waterway is 80m-wide and 18km-long small but new waterway constructed in 2012 and connect the Han River to the Yellow Sea through water gates and dock system.  The original plan has been largely changed with limited transportation and water exchanges to the Han River.  The brackish water system, actually two layers of low and high salinity, was relatively persistent in the waterway.  Furthermore, the event discharge of the Gulpo stream with many pollutants during heavy rain leaded to environmental problems such as algal blooms and low-oxygen bottom water.  This paper describes the monitoring results of water quality with algal information and the present status of benthic organisms with the focus of barnacle.  The weekly water quality monitoring revealed that the seawater intrusion was helpful to improve the in-way water quality.  The obvious spatial difference in environmental parameters and algal species composition were detected, showing the mixing process of freshwater and seawater with high concentration of nutrients input from the Gulpo stream at the middle of the waterway.  The benthic organisms on newly immersed substrates were also spatial and vertical difference in succession processes similar to the water quality results.  The present water system in the waterway is still unstable and highly affected by the incoming water quality from both the Yellow Sea (“clean”) and the Gulpo stream (and/or the Han River) (“polluted”).  The Government guideline addresses the highly improved water quali
