This research work focuses on a hybrid energy storage system which uses the concepts of combined PHES(Pumped Hydro Energy Storage) and CAES(Compressed Air Energy Storage). The system consists of two tanks, one open tank to the air and one closed tank which stores water and compressed air by using a multistage pump. The multistage pump and hydro turbine are used for the charging and discharging process respectively, similar to pumped storage operations in hydropower \plants. This energy storage system is proposed to overcome the difficulties posed by PHES or CAES. A major disadvantage of the two systems is that they require a large amount of area and have high construction costs. But the proposed hybrid energy storage system can reduce the amount of space required while providing the functions of both energy storage systems. Instead of a reservoir in a pumped-storage hydro-electricity plant, a pressure tank is used, where the head of water is provided by the compressed air trapped inside the tank. So, the design of pressure tank is relatively important in this energy storage system because the pressure tank should safely store the water of large volume for a long time in high pressure. In this study, the parameters used to design the pressure tank has been formulated and described with proper mathematical derivations. |
