The presence of taste and odor compounds can greatly reduce the quality of drinking water supplies. Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol(MIB) are representative compounds inducing earthy-musty taste and odor in drinking water which can be detected by consumers at extremely low concentrations(5~10 ng/L). These materials are produced by some species of cyanobacteria(blue-green algae) and actinomycetes(a filamentous bacteria). It is released after cell lysis and death and, depending on the species, it may also be actively excreted by healthy cells into the water column. Geosmin does not a public health risk, but its detectible presence in treated drinking water can cause serious concern in the eyes of public about aesthetic quality of water supply. And, the high costs of treatment with powdered activated carbon or ozone make it impractical for most facilities to continuously treat their incoming raw water.
