Current framework of the smart water grid development is mostly focusing on water supply network and evolution of operating technology, but physical reliability or safety of major infrastructures related to water resources such as dams and pipelines in terms of construction technology are seldom considered. However, it is important to guaranty the safety of these infrastructures since reliable supply and transportation of both raw and treated water is as critical as distribution systems and the operation of the grid network with these uncertainties is challenging.
The safety and performance of the structural systems can be evaluated in construction engineering, especially in geotechnical engineering. Verification of structural reliability, performance against critical natural disasters such as flood induced by heavy rainfall and strong earthquake ground motions are routine processes in construction engineering. These are generally evaluated in both design and operation stages, and various technical solutions are involved such as numerical simulation and physical modeling.
