The anthropogenic impacts on offshore marine environment have been increasing and often gave wide and long adverse effects over large marine ecosystems. Fisheries production is likely to largely rely on ecosystem conditions and there are increasing concerns of multiple stressors affecting the coastal resilience. Those stressors could induce cascade effects on marine ecosystems through trophic linkages. In terms of ecosystem-based management, understanding trophic linkages of a coastal ecosystem is essential to evaluate environmental status of target coastal ecosystems. Coastal ecosystem has been remarked as a critical part to sustain marine ecosystem resilience. The linkage between offshore and coastal environments could be essential to understand oceanographic impacts of offshore events on marine ecosystems. However, there are many limitations to study offshore marine environment due to their environmental features as well as the complexity of oceanographic phenomena itself. This paper overviews ongoing research experiences to study ecological impacts of offshore sand mining activities. Firstly, academic approaches to understand oceanographic and ecological processes affected by sand mining are shown. Secondly, some limitations to the performance of research activities were remarked from both scientific and administrative views. |
