The extreme water consumptions of Central Asian countries have brought the environmental disaster in Aral Sea. Two transboundary rivers in Aral Sea basin are main sources of the shared water resources in Central Asia countries: Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan (Bekchanov et al., 2015). The Aral Sea disaster has brought by the water overuse and inefficiency in irrigation. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the water security issue remained in the basin because the five riparian governments were engaged in conflicts to utilize freshwater resources only for their own national development. Starting from that period, they have done little to improve the environmental consequences, such as the fall of the sea level by about 22 meters. Moreover, the Aral Sea has been depleted, losing more than half of its surface and roughly three-quarters of its volume compared to the level measured in the 1960s. |
