Small hydro power is one of the most environmentally friendly renewable energy. In particular, micro hydraulic turbine producing electric power up to 100 kW is receiving attention all over the world. The power system is generally required to operate for low water head and to adjust to flow rate variations. Kaplan turbine is usually proper to the varying operating conditions, but complicated mechanical system for adjustable propeller blades and wicket gates and automatic control system should be employed. In the study, a hydraulic turbine with a fixed blade is combined with an electric power converter system. Although the mechanically simple turbine can’t be operated on the rated speed for varying flow rate, the electric power converter system converts the generated non-rated frequency electricity to the rated one with the grid power system. For a prototype micro turbine system, the performance measurement testing has been carried out on the site by controlling a turbine rotating speed and a guide vane opening angle. It has been confirmed that the maximum 89.8 kw turbine system can generate electricity stably under low head under 2.0 m and low flow rate under 0.2 m3/s. |
