A coating with self-cleaning properties would be interesting and attractive because it could save a lot of time and cost for maintenance. As a commercial product, their potential is huge and their market truly global because of wide range of possible applications, especially photovoltaic systems, self-cleaning coatings may become an important labour-saving device. For example, cleaning of solar cell module surfaces (glass and aluminum flame) is generally done by using detergents accompanied by scrubbing, wiping and high-pressure water jet. This type of work is labor-intensive, troublesome, costly and consumes a huge amount of energy. Hence, a self-cleaning surface is highly desirable. The field of self-cleaning coatings is divided into two categories: hydrophobic and hydrophilic. These two types of coating both clean themselves through the action of water, the former by rolling droplets and the latter by sheeting water that carries away dirt. Hydrophilic coatings, however, have an additional property: they can chemically break down adsorbed dirt in sunlight.
We report here a self-cleaning nanoparticles coating with antireflection (AR) properties for photovoltaic application.
