Gonyostomum semen (Eer.) Diesing is a large freshwater raphidophyte with two flagella. The cell membrane is thin and fragile and brakes easily. G. semen is a world-wide distributed, that is a bloom-forming and noxious phytoplankton. That usually occurs in brown-water lakes and which is often referred to as an invasive species. On the other hand, G. semen is rare observations and report in Korea. G. semen was collected from Gaecheon reservoir in Uiseong, Gyeongsangbuk-Do. The identification was based on light microscopy. They have relatively simple morphology, and limited diagnostic characters, which present a major difficulty in differentiating between species of the genus. To identification genus Gonyostomum species, we analyzed molecular data from nuclear ITS and partial SSU r DNA sequence. To investigate growth characteristics, experiment on phosphate concentrations and light intensity was carried out, and each experiment was carried out with monoculture under the condition of batch culture. G. semen showed high growth rate at 30 μM phosphate concentrations, 12L:12D _ 80 μmol photons m-2 s-1 and 16L:8D _ 120 μmol photons m-2 s-1.
