Pumped storage plants play an important role in modern power grids. Although, this type of system has been used for decades, the design methods for pump-turbine impeller are not completely open for public. Using the available resources and techniques used for pumps and turbines the initial hydraulic impeller was designed by CFD analysis using ratings of one of Korea’s pumped storage power stations. Some power plants have grown quite old and require a lot of maintenance. Recently, the power company plans to change the impeller. As this type of study is not common in Korea, it gives researchers the opportunity to develop a new impeller and also improve the domestic knowledge and techniques for the pump-turbine design in Korea. Since, this is a trial study; there are many unknown parameters for the actual impeller. However, using the known design parameters of head and flow rate in both modes a simple 1D meridional plane can be generated using hydraulic design of centrifugal pump. By the use of blade modelling software a 3 dimensional model is made and CFD analysis is carried out using full domain analysis. The initial design needs to be revised several times to find a design suitable for both modes. The best efficiency of pump mode is 89.85% and turbine mode is 91.8%. However, with further improvements in impeller shape it is expected to improve. |
