In reverse osmosis (RO) process, RO membrane fouling should be carefully monitored to save operation cost in real field application. Product (permeate) flow rate and salt concentration are two key parameters to evaluate the RO membrane fouling. Normalized permeate flow rate and salt passage are used to evaluating RO membrane performance in the real field. The two normalized parameters come from American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D-4516 standard method. The normalization process based on ASTM D-4516 standard method is not generally acceptable to different seawater qualities and RO membranes, which is because the temperature correction factor and osmotic pressure equation are very complicated functions of ion constitution and membrane characteristics. |
