This paper presents long term settlement behavior of embankment construction on soft clay deposit in Yangsan area of Busan. The characteristics of thick clay deposit in Busan is subjected to artesian pressure from an aquifer below. This study consider artesian pressure with 5m pressure head at aquifer layer. The embankment was constructed on natural subsoil with improvement by PVDs installation. The PVDs were installed to a depth of 25m with spacing of 1m in a square pattern. The finite element method (FEM) analysis using soft soil model is conducted to evaluate long term settlement behaviors. To analyse the PVD-improved subsoil, a simple approach using the equivalent vertical hydraulic conductivity of PVD-improved subsoil was employed. The FEM make initial pore water pressure under artesian condition. The results of settlement are good agreement with monitored data at Yangsan area; the consolidation acceleration increased when the depth of PVDs increased, and the installation depth of PVDs reached the aquifer, can reduce the consolidation time. By the equivalent vertical hydraulic conductivity method in FEM, the result indicated that PVDs increased the vertical hydraulic conductivity of soft subsoil by about 150 to 200 times compared to the original. The results of degree of consolidation are relatively good agreement with results obtained by Jang et al.(2000) method. |
