Installing PVDs to accelerate the consolidation of a soft fine grained clay with high moisture content for improvement soft ground. However, case of existing artesian pressure under soft clay, velocity of consolidation and drainage capacity of PVDs may be decline because of decreasing effective stress. Therefore, this paper investigate the consolidation behavior of soft ground at the Nakdong river estuary with artesian pressure and without artesian pressure for partially penetrated prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs). Two type of one-dimensional large size column test produce to find out the consolidation characteristics of clay at the same time. During consolidation, measured the vertical settlement and variation of excess pore water pressure with different load system. From this result, total settlement of clay layer with artesian pressure was higher than without artesian pressure. Dissipation rate of excess pore water pressure delayed and remained in clay layer with artesian pressure. In case of artesian pressure at upper position of drainage, range of excess pore water pressure by artesian pressure slowly decreased with time because of upper flow through PVDs. undrained shear strength of clay ground with artesian pressure was lower than without artesian pressure
