Study on the Occurrence of Cyanobacteria Producing Taste/Odor Compounds in Nakdong River in Korea |

To investigate the characteristics of the occurrences of taste/odor compounds- geosmin & 2-MIB, the unit formation potential was determined by using cultured blue-green algae. Also, the occurrence of geosmin and 2-MIB was characterized in the Nakdong River from April to July in 2015. The unit formation potential of geosmin and 2-MIB were studied and revealed as 7.4x10-6~1.7x10-5 ng/cell and 9.7x10-6~8.0x10-5 ng/cell respectively. A two-week peak of geosmin was observed at the Dalsung site and it could have originated from the domination of Anabaena species in early June. The 2-MIB event happened once in the lowest downstream part of the Nakdong River. Therefore, it could be concluded that the occurrence of taste and odor compounds were specific to the sampling sites and cyanobacteria species. |
