Detection of Total Coliforms and Salmonella spp. in Drinking Water by Using Body Surface Temperature |

Aiming to figure out a fast and no-energy method to detect coliforms and Salmonella spp. in drinking water, we first assessed the usability of an enzymatic method and an immunochromatography test which identify the existence of coliforms and Salmonella spp. in random water. In previous study, we had developed the enzymatic method to detect coliforms in water by using only body surface temperature instead of using the incubator needed electricity. To detect Salmonella spp. additionally, we used commercially available immunochromatography test kits for Salmonella spp. After incubating water samples for 24 hours to detect coliforms by using body surface temperature, we conducted the immunochromatography test with the culture samples. We found that coliforms and Salmonellas spp. could be detected simultaneously in the culture using body surface temperature only. We concluded that using body surface temperature, it is possible to detect coliforms and Salmonella spp. and within 24 hours, without any energy involved. |
