The popular statistical method to estimate the maximum flood that used empirical equations between the precipitation and streamflow is quite unreliable under the climate change condition, and subject to changes of watershed condition, such as land cover and land use. To overcome this problem, a new methodology for probable maximum flood estimation is proposed in this study. As a case study, the probable maximum flood is simulated using the physically based WEHY model for the Upper Feather River Watershed (UFRW), and the American River Watershed (ARW) in northern California, with the physically maximized precipitation. The results show that this methodology can clearly present the behind physical cause of the issue: the maximum precipitation does not necessarily produce the maximum flood |
