In order to predict the settlement of shallow foundations, the concept of strain influence factor in the Schmertmann method was adopted and shear wave velocity (Vs) was utilized to represent soil stiffness instead of cone tip resistance (qc). By combining Vs measured in the field and the modulus reduction curve measured in the laboratory, the deformation characteristics of soil can be reliably estimated. In the proposed method, vertical stress increase was determined by the strain influence factor from elastic approach and corresponding modulus variation was determined considering stress level at each depth. This state-dependent stress-strain relationship was utilized to calculate settlement of footings based on elastic theory. To verify the proposed method, geotechnical centrifuge tests were carried out using a square model footing. The load-settlement curves are obtained for each model during loading sequences and Vs profiles were also measured before loadings. The load-settlement curves estimated by the proposed method are compared with the centrifuge test results. |
