Soil liquefaction analysis is an essential procedure for seismic evaluation regardless of types of structures. Current state of practice for liquefaction triggering analysis is composed of three stages; preliminary screening process, Seed and Idriss (1971) semi-empirical simplified procedure, and detailed cyclic triaxial testing stage. Current approach has revealed technical debates such as allowable factor of safety, sampling issues, and other applicable testing methods. On this study, an improved liquefaction triggering analysis, which is called Idriss and Boulanger’s (2008) method, is newly adopted on the specific testbed site with the loosely saturated sandy soil deposit. Detail site investigation including downhole survey and cyclic triaxial tests is arranged for reliable evaluation. A comparative study was made between the existing method by Seed & Idriss method plus cyclic triaxial test, and Idriss & Boulanger method. As a result, Idriss and Boulanger method produced higher factor of safety than existing ones. The site was evaluated as highly liquefiable. As the updated method is believed to yield reasonable safety factor and is independently applicable without the need for additional laboratory tests, and has been improved significantly, it is beneficial to consider this method for future revision of liquefaction triggering analysis procedure. |
