When we talk about the future, water security has drawn increased attention over the past decade due to hyper-connectivity of water resources and uncertainty of climate change. Water security has been also regarded as a vital driving force to lead to sustainable economic growth as well as a protective approach to adopt water-related disasters. Still, the relationship of water security and economic development has been mostly explained that minimal platform of water resources investment can alleviate poverty and promote emerging markets in under-developed or developing countries with little discussion for developed countries.
As socio-economically developed, water supply is getting dependent on some dominant methods which are highly efficient and reliable to provide domestic, industrial and agricultural water. However, it could be responsible for high vulnerability of water supply, causing huge economic damages in case of water-related crises. Furthermore, major multinational water-related firms of some developed countries take the lead in water markets which are growing at an annual average of more than 6% even though water industry in developing countries has rapidly grown recently. This study aims to make strategies that water security underpins economic growth and resilient society needed to incorporate water into the green economies particularly in developed countries. And then it was applied for Korean case and some developed countries like Netherlands, Israel and Singapore which have already innovative approaches to manage water-related challenge, promote water industry, and achieve high water security.
