Eight river dams in the Nakdong River basin in South Korea have been constructed for the purpose of flood control and effective water resource use regarding climate change. However, the construction of the river dame causes groundwater level rising adjacent to the upstream regions of the river dams, especially in wet season. This study examined groundwater level quality change and river level change due to the construction of the Haman river dam area in the downstream area of the Nakdong River basin. Groundwater monitoring wells in the riparian zone of the Gwangryeo Stream and Iryeong Stream tributaries of the Nakdong River during April 2010-October 2012. The Nakdong River level has been measured at Ducknam Observatory. The relation ship of groundwater level and river level was estimated relative to the influence of seasonal rainfall. As a result of this study, the groundwater quality showed lower Ca2+, HCO3-, and CO3- concentration and higher NO3- concentration near the Nakdong River, which indicated greater interaction between groundwater and river water due to river dam construction. |
