Weirs and embankments are highly important hydraulic structures in river regions.
Various hydraulic conditions (e.g. management water level rise, water discharge caused by floodgate
operation) cause saturation level increase at the structure body, and floodgate operation during
typhoon/rainfall season cause wave height increase and turbulence occurrence which can result in
erosion/scouring at riverside, structure body and river bed.
Throughout the world there has been a great leap in the field of erosion/scouring approaching the
matter from hydraulic perspective, however the quantity of studies discussing this field with
geotechnical point of view is extremely insufficient.
Therefore, in this study, serious of laboratory/in-situ tests are performed using the JET (Jet
Erosion Test) device developed by K-water to analyze the erosion/scouring characteristics of the
ground materials in the Nakdong river area in South Korea.
