The aim of this study was to determine the optimum hydraulic retention time (HRT) in order to remove nitrogen and organic matter in real domestic wastewater using a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The MFC was operated with a range of HRTs from 0.6 h to 6 h at a 10 Ω fixed external resistance. A nitrate reduction efficiency of 56.5% was achieved, and the nitrate reduction rate was 1,220 ± 2.69 g/m3/d at for a HRT of 0.6 h. |
