In this paper, a case study of a slope failure and remediation is summarized for a large sectional tunnel portal. Extensive rock slope failure occurred along discontinuities of rock mass after 46mm of rainfall, which causes subsequent unstability of upper large scale cut slope. Based on geological survey and face mapping, the reason of failure is believed as the existence of unfavorable filling clays within discontinuities of weathered rock mass and their saturation induced joint weakening. Right before the slope failure, settlement time histories showed a sharp increase of displacement rate. For ultimate remediation, grid block based earth anchor system was successfully applied for the slope, and additional rockbolting and grouting method for in side of the tunnel. This case study is expected to serve as a valuable reference for other similar engineering of large sectional slope stability. |
