An 800g-tons capacity, 8.0m platform radius geotechnical centrifuge has been installed at K-water Institute, Daejeon, Korea in 2012 and it is one of the largest in the world. The maximum capacity of the centrifuge is 150g and maximum 8000kg payload can be loaded in 2.0m(L) × 2.0m(W) × 2.0m(H) large platform to be ac-celerated up to 100g. The centrifuge is equipped with fluid rotary joint, fiber optic rotary joint, electrical slip rings, and on-board data acquisition system. For seismic performance evaluations of large structures, a large scale uniaxial servo hydraulic in-flight earthquake simulator has been developed. It has 1.6m(L) × 0.8m(W) experimental platform and can simulate maximum 22 g horizontal base motion in sinusoidal waveform to shake 1500 kg payload. In this article, the details of equipment developed for physical modeling research will be introduced and lessons learnt during installation of large geotechnical centrifuge will be shared with the re-search community of physical modeling in geotechnical engineering. |
