As centrifuge modelling is becoming a more popular way to understand the behavior of geotechnical struc-tures, radial G-field effect can be a concern when rotation direction and longitudinal direction of a centrifuge model container coincide with each other. In this paper, the effect of a radial G-field on the analysis of centri-fuge modelling of slopes is investigated through multiple small centrifuge tests. The difference between linear model geometry and transformed virtual prototype geometry is explained using simple, limit equilibrium slope-stability analyses. Also, a simple calculation method to account for radial G-field effect is provided. As a re-sult, it is useful to use the transformed virtual prototype geometry for analysis because it provides more accu-rate evaluation of instability and possible backward sliding of slopes by earthquake motions. Visual inspection of vertical deformation noodles provides other evidence of backward sliding and curved geometry due to ra-dial G-field effect. |
