Electrical resistivity monitoring method has widely been used for monitoring of structural integrity for dams since the method provides nondestructive, quick and economical way of detecting leakage zones with low resistivity by the aging effects. In this study, the electrical resistivity monitoring method was conducted to the dam site for detection of the aging effects. The resistivity monitoring systems are divided into two parts: the filed system and the office system. Two systems are connected by bidirectional CDMA communications. We acquired resistivity monitoring data at a test dam site located in the southern part of Korea peninsula. The electrodes were installed permanently at the center of the crest on the dam. The data were automatically measured by time-lapse during period of monitoring. In results, this method successfully detected anomalous low resistivity zones in the dam. The results show that there are almost no changes in resistivity ratio by time-lapse inversion, and this coincides with the fact the structural integrity of dams were maintained during the period of monitoring. The seasonal resistivity and temperature variations can also be significant in the earth cored rock-fill dams because they depend mainly on the seepage through the dam. Therefore, we could confirm the electrical resistivity monitoring method and long term temperature monitoring at dam can provide helpful information about leakage zones by aging effects. |
