We have developed an algorithm for detection of leakage zones in earth core rock-fill dams. The algorithm employs time-lapse inversion for two sets of electrical resistivity sections obtained along the crest of a dam. The new method is far superior to the conventional interpretation of a single snapshot of electrical resistivity section and also to the independent inversion of two snapshots in detecting low-resistivity leakage zones. For verification, we applied the method for numerical data obtained from a model with internal low-resistivity leakage zone. The results have demonstrated successful detection of the leakage zones. Field tests for two earth core rock-fill dams in Korea had been made. The results of monitoring were proven to identical with those of independent dam monitoring results of structural integrity. From this work, we also found that measured data are severely affected by temperature. Thus, it is suggested that reference and time-lapse data set should have similar condition in temperature to produce more reliable results for dam monitoring. |
