Since 2009, trial impoundment for the newly impounded reservoir was conducted to test stability of hydraulic facilities. During the trial impoundment periods, stagnation of contaminants entered from watershed caused significant water quality degradation. To minimize water quality degradation caused by impoundment, reservoir operation scenarios of 3 different minimum water level (elevation 161.5 m, 165.0 m, 170.0 m, Case 1, 2, 3 respectively) after the trial discharge (Case 4) and no trial impoundment scenario were considered. 2 dimensional water quality and hydrodynamic model was used for simulation. Grid generation was conducted using topographical map and computational grid was consist of 38 segments with 200 m longitudinal spacing and 46 layers with 1 m depth. Monthly water quality data from 2006 to 2012 were used and parameters from the Gunwi reservoir model were used. Inflow was calculated based on flow monitoring data from Gumi gauging station considering watershed area. Simulation results show that case 1(trial impoundment and discharge to elevation 161.5 m) shows lower concentration of COD comparing with case 4 (no trial impoundment and discharge) and maximum COD concentration differences was 1.35 mg/L. Previously impounded reservoirs shows COD decrement trend of about 0.1 mg/L/year and simulation results show the trial impoundment and discharge is effective to shorten water quality stabilization period. |
