A verticallyalignedcarbonnanotube(VACNT)membranecreatedfromthesuccessfulfusionof nanotechnologyandmembranetechnologyhasbeenstatedtobeanextgenerationmembranedue to itsfastwatertransportandantimicrobialproperties.AlthoughpreviousstudiesoftheVACNT membrane reportedthepotentialforfastwatertransportordesalinationbymoleculardynamics simulation, thisstudyisthe first toreportonthefeasibilityofusingtheVACNTmembraneforwater purification. TheVACNTmembrane(4.8nmofporediameterand6.81010 #/cm2 of poredensity)was fabricated andits flux, rejectionperformance,andmembranebiofoulingtendencywereevaluatedin comparison tothecommercialultrafiltration (UF)membrane.TheVACNTmembraneappearedtohavea water flux approximatelythreetimeshigherthantheUFmembraneandwatertransportapproximately 70,000timesfasterthanconventionalno-slip flow.Thishigher flux waspeculiarlyobservedinwater,the most hydrophilicsolvent,whileothersolventsshowedthatpermeate flux decreasedwithhigher viscosity.TherejectionpropertyoftheVACNTmembraneasexaminedbytheMWCOmeasurementwas similar tothecommercialUFmembrane.Additionally,theVACNTmembraneshowedbetterbiofouling resistance withapproximately15%lesspermeate flux reductionand2loglessbacterialattachmentthan the UFmembrane.ThisstudyreportsthehighpotentialoftheVACNTmembranewithantifouling property inthewaterpurification process.
